6 Reasons Why Your Skincare Routine isn’t working

Have you ever bought a product and after using it for a few days dumped it because the effectiveness of your skin is not what you expected?  Truthfully, not all products have that 4 to 7-day result we often crave, even when some show potential, we are here to let you know that you can always achieve a better result if you set the right conditions to help the product prove itself.  We speak to a lot of clients daily, and we often recommend different products for their various skincare needs, one common thing is that we all want blemish-free and glowing skin. Here are some of the reasons we noticed that are hindering the effectiveness of your skincare routine and solutions on how to improve them.
  1. You aren’t using the right product or do not know how to use it:
Do you know your skin type and the recommended product for you? Even when you do, you need to understand that there is a way you would use a product to enable you to see the best results. Dermatologists recommend that you layer products in your routine after cleansing, in order of thinnest to the thickest formulation. This enables lightweight products like a serum to enter your skin without struggling to get absorbed through thick products. While combining products, you need to know that combination may not always yield fast results, so it is advisable to alternate products. For example; using products with the same active ingredients, one in the morning and another at night. Especially for products that contain retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, and beta hydroxy acids.
  1. Your skin routine isn’t working because you aren’t sticking to it:
When it comes to skincare, you have to keep at it to see results. Consistency is key to getting your skin glowing. For example, when you’re using targeted products for skin concerns like acne, fine lines, or pigmentation, you will see skin pop with continuous use for at least 30 days or a month to get the result that your product can achieve.
  1. The weather might be working against you:
Before you start any skincare journey it is important to consider the weather and the best product that would suit the weather. Weather conditions can seriously throw you off your glow game. Considering that we have moved away from the harmattan season where your skin can get dry fast without thick coats of creams, butter, and moisturizers to hotter day times, it is important to switch to lightweight sunscreens. Here is a dress scenario you should consider, do you feel like wearing that chiffon top or light shirt? If you feel like you do, then we see no reason why you should be layering your skin in a thick formulation if you aren’t going to be in a cool environment all day long.
  1. Your hygiene is questionable:
Your skin can glow when you clean yourself and your surroundings. Good hygiene is so important when it comes to achieving glowing skin, and we cannot overemphasize this point. So, here are some key reminders of what you need to do to stay clean
  • Firstly, let us remind you today to change your pillowcase honey. Change your pillowcase every other week, if possible every 3 days in order not to recycle dead skin on it.
  • Don’t touch your face with dirty hands, before you do anything sensitive like rubbing your body or putting things [e.g. food/pills] in your body to ensure you wash your hands.
  • Always have your bath especially at night to get rid of bacteria, sweat, and any oils/product build-up on your skin.
  • Remember to change your bathing sponge/loofah regularly [every 3 months just like your toothbrush] and always wash your towels and makeup brushes.
  1. You aren’t nourishing your body:
What goes into your body is as important as what you rub on your body. Vitamin; D, C, E, and K are undoubtedly the best vitamins for your skin health, and the most effective way of getting them is through a healthy and balanced diet. However, due to lifestyle, age and deficiencies some people may need help by using some pills, applying vitamin-infused creams, and topical vitamin-based serums to give their body the boost of vitamins their skin needs to glow. For your skin to get nourished you might have to rotate the use of certain products, for example; if you have ever done a skin peel you would notice that apart from the smooth and brighter after look, your skin is losing a thick layer. With prolonged use, your skin gets to a thinner level, so you don’t get such a dramatic result because there is just less dead skin to remove. Dermatologists recommend that you should return to your old routine/products that have worked for you after a while. Change your products every three to six months to keep stimulating your skin because our skin loves the stimulation but with the right product and professional recommendation.
  1. Some of your skincare products have expired:
Let us tell you in clear terms now that you need to ditch that cream you both 2 years ago. Some products have expiry dates on the container, but the truth is that oftentimes the manufacturers aren’t referring to the length of time it should be used but rather when it is unopened [shelf life]. Most skincare products have a 2 years lifespan but the best practice is to use them within a year once opened.
